Our Sri Lanka Adventure Tour takes you beyond the familiar highlights to explore the island’s remarkable variety of landscapes, wildlife and local life. From the ancient rock fortress of Sigiriya to the elephant country of Gal Oya, this journey brings together cultural discoveries, outdoor experiences and time in places that many visitors pass by.
Explore villages and forested mountains in the Knuckles Mountain Range, walk a section of the Pekoe Trail through Sri Lanka’s tea country, and discover the open grasslands and cloud forests of Horton Plains. Take the scenic hill-country train towards Ella, look for wildlife on safari in Yala National Park, and enjoy some time by the southern coast before heading inland to the extraordinary biodiversity of Sinharaja Rainforest.
Designed for curious travellers who want more than a checklist of famous sights, this journey combines active exploration with opportunities to slow down and appreciate each place. There are early starts, rewarding walks and some longer drives, balanced with free time to explore at your own pace. The result is a varied introduction to Sri Lanka that leaves room for the unexpected.
Discover up to 6 UNESCO World Heritage Sites
From ancient cultural landmarks and the historic city of Galle to the highland landscapes of Horton Plains and Knuckles and the biodiversity of Sinharaja Rainforest, this journey offers the opportunity to explore up to six of Sri Lanka’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites — both cultural and natural.
Our experienced local team will help you experience Sri Lanka beyond its familiar highlights, with local knowledge and thoughtfully planned journeys connecting the island’s different landscapes and communities.
Sri Lanka may be compact, but its landscapes and ways of life change considerably as you travel across the island. In the Cultural Triangle, ancient monuments and archaeological sites tell stories of powerful kingdoms and sophisticated engineering. Around Sigiriya, you’ll also have the opportunity to experience a more everyday side of the country through a village visit and a traditional cooking experience.
Further east, Gal Oya offers a different atmosphere. The reservoir and surrounding forest are home to varied wildlife, and a boat safari provides a chance to explore the area from the water. Elephants may sometimes be seen swimming between islands, although wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed.
The journey then continues into the Knuckles Mountain Range, where forested slopes, small villages and mountain views offer a change of pace. There is time to enjoy the setting, with optional activities available for those who want to get out on the trails or explore the surrounding countryside. You can choose how active you want to be here rather than having every hour planned.
The central highlands reveal another side of the island. At Horton Plains, the landscape opens into high-altitude grassland and cloud forest, with a walk to the famous World’s End viewpoint. The cooler climate and open scenery feel a world away from the tropical lowlands.
You’ll also walk a section of the Pekoe Trail, a long-distance walking route that connects tea-growing areas and rural communities across the highlands. Rather than attempting the entire trail, this itinerary introduces you to a part of it, offering a closer look at the landscapes shaped by Sri Lanka’s tea industry.
A scenic train journey towards Ella is another highlight. The train winds through the hill country, passing tea plantations, valleys and small settlements. Once in Ella, there is time to explore the town and visit the iconic Nine Arch Bridge, with a walk to Little Adam’s Peak offering further views over the surrounding hills.
In the south, a safari in Yala National Park brings the opportunity to look for elephants, leopards and other wildlife. The park’s landscapes vary from open scrubland to lagoons and forest, and every safari is different. After the early starts and activity of the highlands, Tangalle offers a chance to slow down. Enjoy the beach, take a walk, or consider an optional activity such as surfing, kayaking or a relaxing treatment.
The final part of the journey leads inland to Sinharaja Rainforest, one of Sri Lanka’s most important areas of tropical biodiversity. Accompanied by a local guide, you’ll walk through dense forest alive with bird calls, insects and plant life. This is a different kind of wildlife experience from the open landscapes of the national parks, with the focus on the richness of the forest itself.
You’ll finish in Galle, a historic coastal town known for its fortifications, architecture and lively streets. A guided walk provides an introduction to the old town before your departure or onward travels.
This is an active, varied journey rather than a beach holiday or a tour focused only on famous sights. Expect early starts, time outdoors, some longer road journeys and opportunities to explore on foot. At the same time, free time in places such as Knuckles and Tangalle gives you room to pause, enjoy the surroundings or choose an optional activity that interests you.
Our Sri Lanka adventure tours are designed for travellers who enjoy nature, appreciate local encounters and want to understand a destination beyond its postcard views. The journey combines well-known landmarks with quieter corners of the island, supported by a local team who help connect the different regions and experiences.
If you’re looking for a trip that brings together culture, hiking, wildlife and coastal downtime, this 13-day Sri Lanka Tour offers a rewarding way to discover the island’s many contrasts.

Your Sri Lankan adventure begins as you leave the airport behind and head towards Habarana, a peaceful base surrounded by tropical greenery and the ancient landscapes of the Cultural Triangle. If you have arrived earlier, we can collect you from your hotel in Negombo instead.
Before checking in, we’ll stop for lunch at a welcoming local restaurant run by Sri Lankan women. It’s a lovely introduction to the island’s home-style cooking, and you may find yourself wishing you could take a few recipes home.
The rest of the afternoon is yours to enjoy at leisure. If you still have some energy after your journey, you could climb Pidurangala Rock for sunset and enjoy one of the best views of the famous Sigiriya Rock Fortress. Your guide and driver can help arrange the visit; the entrance fee is payable locally. Alternatively, settle into the hotel and enjoy a quiet first evening.
We can recommend a restaurant in town for dinner, with everyone free to join or dine at their own expense.
An early start brings us to Sigiriya Rock Fortress before the day grows too hot and busy. Rising dramatically above the surrounding forest, this fifth-century royal citadel is one of Sri Lanka’s most extraordinary landmarks. The climb involves approximately 1,200 steps, leading past ancient gardens, impressive rock formations and the famous frescoes known as the Heavenly Maidens. From the summit, the views stretch across the surrounding countryside.
After breakfast back at the hotel, we’ll take a little time to rest before heading into a nearby village. Here, we’ll get a glimpse of everyday rural life and prepare a traditional Sri Lankan lunch together, discovering local ingredients and cooking traditions along the way.
In the early evening, we’ll gather for a cultural dance performance, an opportunity to experience some of the island’s traditional music, costumes and movement. Dinner is at your own expense, either at a restaurant in town or at your leisure.
After breakfast, we’ll visit Dambulla Cave Temple, a remarkable complex of five cave shrines adorned with Buddhist statues, murals and centuries of religious history. Set beneath a rocky outcrop, this living place of worship offers a fascinating insight into Sri Lanka’s spiritual heritage.
From here, we’ll leave the familiar sights of the Cultural Triangle behind and travel east towards Gal Oya. The journey takes us into a quieter part of the island, where forested hills, rural villages and vast stretches of greenery replace the busier tourist routes. Keep an eye out along the way: with a little luck, we may spot wild elephants in the surrounding countryside.
Our home for the night is a comfortable glamping camp immersed in nature. Enjoy the peaceful setting before gathering for dinner.
Gal Oya offers one of Sri Lanka’s most distinctive wildlife experiences. We’ll rise early for a boat safari on Senanayake Samudraya, the country’s largest reservoir, where forested islands rise from the water and wildlife gathers along the shoreline.
This is one of the few places in Sri Lanka where elephants may be seen swimming between islands. Watching them from the water, if we’re fortunate enough to encounter them, is a very different experience from a conventional jeep safari. The reservoir and its shores are also home to birds, crocodiles and other wildlife.
After a scenic break for refreshments, we’ll return to camp in the morning. There will be some time to enjoy the surroundings before checking out at noon. Depending on your interests and the camp’s available activities, you may be able to relax by the pool, learn about local farming, join a cooking demonstration or explore the surrounding area.
Around midday, we’ll set off towards the Knuckles Mountain Range. The drive takes us through changing landscapes and into the cooler hills, where a characterful former tea planter’s bungalow awaits. Arriving towards evening, we’ll have time to settle in and appreciate the mountain setting.
The Knuckles Mountain Range is one of Sri Lanka’s most rewarding landscapes for walkers and nature lovers. Recognised as part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is a world of forested ridges, waterfalls, tea-growing communities and trails that wind through the hills.
Today is deliberately left open. You can choose a guided hike to waterfalls and nearby villages, take on the more demanding Five Peaks Trail, or explore the surrounding countryside by tuk-tuk. Those who prefer a slower day can simply enjoy the bungalow, take a gentle walk near the property or sit with a cup of tea and watch the clouds move across the mountains.
The longer hikes are rewarding but require a good level of fitness. A picnic lunch is included in the optional guided hikes where specified, as there are few facilities along the trails. All activities are weather-dependent.
There is no pressure to do everything. This is one of those places where staying still can be just as rewarding as heading out to explore.
We’ll come together for dinner at the accommodation in the evening.
After breakfast, we’ll leave the mountains and head towards Kandy, Sri Lanka’s historic hill capital. Set around a tranquil lake, the city is closely connected to the island’s Buddhist heritage and its last royal kingdom.
We’ll begin with a short orientation tour, followed by free time to browse the shops, explore the streets or enjoy a coffee. If you’d like to learn more about the city’s spiritual significance, you can join an optional visit to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic; the entrance fee is payable locally.
Next, we’ll continue towards Ambuluwawa Biodiversity Complex, known for its distinctive tower and panoramic views across the surrounding hills. We’ll also stop for lunch at a welcoming family-run restaurant, offering another opportunity to enjoy Sri Lankan hospitality and home-style food.
Our journey continues into the central highlands and Nuwara Eliya, where tea plantations, green valleys and a cooler climate give the landscape a distinctly different character. After checking in, we’ll head out for a relaxed sunset visit around Gregory Lake, time permitting.
Dinner is at your own expense, either at the hotel or at a restaurant in town.
We’ll start early and travel to Horton Plains National Park, a high-altitude landscape of open grasslands, cloud forest and mist-covered hills. The circular walking route leads to World’s End, a dramatic escarpment with far-reaching views when the skies are clear. Early mornings offer the best chance of seeing the landscape before clouds move in, although the weather is never guaranteed.
After exploring Horton Plains, we’ll continue into the tea country on foot, following a section of the Pekoe Trail. This long-distance hiking route passes through working tea estates, small settlements and some of the island’s most beautiful highland scenery.
Depending on the selected route and conditions, our walk will take us towards the dramatic slopes associated with Devil’s Staircase, with views across tea-covered hills and deep valleys. This is a demanding day combining highland walking and a longer trek, so a reasonable level of fitness and suitable footwear are important.
By evening, we’ll reach our simple guesthouse in the Ohiya area. Surrounded by mountains and greenery, it offers a quieter, more remote overnight stay after a full day outdoors.
Today we’ll experience one of Sri Lanka’s most memorable journeys from the comfort of a train carriage. We’ll board at Idalgashinna station for the scenic ride towards Ella, travelling through tea country, rolling hills and mountain scenery.
Train schedules and seat availability can vary, but the journey offers a wonderful opportunity to appreciate the highlands at a slower pace.
After arriving in Ella, you’ll have time to settle into the hotel and explore the town, either independently or with your guide. Ella has become a popular stop for travellers, with cafés, small shops and views of the surrounding hills.
No visit would feel complete without a stop at the famous Nine Arch Bridge. Set amid lush greenery, this striking railway bridge is one of the area’s best-known landmarks and a lovely place to stretch your legs and take photographs.
We’ll begin the day with a walk up Little Adam’s Peak, one of Ella’s most accessible viewpoints. The trail climbs through green hills and tea plantations before opening onto sweeping views of the surrounding valleys. Those seeking an extra dose of adventure may prefer to try the optional zipline nearby.
Around midday, we’ll leave Ella and travel towards Yala National Park for an afternoon wildlife safari. The park is known for its varied landscapes and rich wildlife, including elephants, crocodiles and an impressive range of birdlife. It is also one of the places where leopards may be spotted, although sightings are never guaranteed.
After the safari, we’ll continue south to Tangalle, where the atmosphere changes from dusty safari tracks to the Indian Ocean coast. Settle into the hotel and enjoy a well-earned evening by the sea.
We’ll gather for a group dinner at a favourite beachside restaurant.
Today is yours to enjoy at your own pace. After several days of early starts, mountain walks and wildlife encounters, there is nothing scheduled and no need to rush.
Spend time by the pool or in the hotel garden, head to the beach, or explore the surrounding coast. If you feel more active, there may be opportunities for surfing, diving, yoga, a massage or a canoe trip on a nearby lagoon, depending on local conditions and availability.
We’ll be happy to help you arrange activities that interest you. Alternatively, simply enjoy the sea breeze and let the day unfold.
Enjoy a relaxed morning in Tangalle, with time for breakfast and a final walk along the coast or a swim, if you wish.
In the early afternoon, we’ll travel inland towards Sinharaja Rainforest, leaving the open coastal landscape behind for a greener world of plantations, hills and dense tropical vegetation. Sinharaja is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Sri Lanka’s most important remaining areas of tropical rainforest, known for its remarkable biodiversity and endemic species.
We’ll arrive in the late afternoon and check into our accommodation near the forest. The rest of the day is free to enjoy the pool, take a gentle walk through the surrounding village or tea-growing landscape, or simply relax before tomorrow’s rainforest excursion.
This morning, we’ll explore Sinharaja on foot with a knowledgeable local guide or naturalist. Beneath the dense canopy, the forest reveals itself gradually: towering trees, tangled vines, unusual insects and the calls of birds hidden among the foliage. With a little patience and an attentive guide, you may encounter some of the many endemic species that make this rainforest so special.
The experience is less about covering distance and more about noticing the details of a living ecosystem. We’ll take time along the trail to learn about the forest’s plants, wildlife and the role this precious habitat plays in Sri Lanka’s natural heritage.
After our walk, we’ll enjoy a local lunch before travelling towards Galle on the southern coast.
Galle Fort, another UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers a different atmosphere altogether. Its historic ramparts, narrow streets, colonial-era buildings, small boutiques and cafés make it an inviting place to explore on foot. The remainder of the evening is free to wander at your own pace. We can suggest restaurants or help reserve a table for dinner, which is at your own expense.
Enjoy breakfast before taking a final look around Galle in daylight. A guided town tour will introduce you to the history and character of the old fort, from its ramparts and historic streets to the everyday life that continues within its walls.
Around noon, one scheduled group transfer will depart for Colombo International Airport for those leaving Sri Lanka. Please ensure your flight time allows sufficient time for the road journey and airport check-in. If your flight departs earlier, or you would prefer a private transfer, please contact us to discuss the options.
If you have more time, we’ll be happy to help arrange an extension along the southern coast or elsewhere in Sri Lanka.
In the following sections, you'll find the essential information for our 13-day Sri Lanka journey. From accommodation and transport to fitness levels and practical arrangements, here's what to know before travelling with us.
We stay in a carefully selected mix of good-quality hotels, a glamping camp, a former tea planter's bungalow and a guesthouse in the hills. Each has been chosen for its location, character or the experience it offers.
All accommodation is planned on a twin-sharing basis, with two guests per room and a private en-suite bathroom. Room layouts and views may vary. If you're travelling alone, please contact us to discuss room-sharing arrangements and any single-room supplement.
Some stays are in more remote areas, where the setting and connection with nature matter more than polished, international-style service. Sri Lanka has its own rhythm, and part of the experience is allowing yourself to slow down and enjoy it.
Breakfast is included throughout the tour. Lunches and dinners are included on selected days, as outlined in the itinerary. On free evenings, you'll have the opportunity to choose where and what you'd like to eat.
We enjoy introducing guests to Sri Lankan food, including local restaurants and home-style cooking. Vegetarian meals can generally be arranged if you let us know in advance.
If you have vegan, gluten-free or other dietary requirements, or food allergies, please contact us before booking so we can discuss what's practical along this route.
We travel by private, air-conditioned vehicle, with the vehicle size selected according to the group. The journey includes some longer drives, particularly between the central highlands, the south coast and Sinharaja.
We'll also experience Sri Lanka by train, travelling from Idalgashinna towards Ella, subject to train schedules and ticket availability. Train travel is part of the experience, and reserved seating cannot always be guaranteed.
The Yala safari takes place in a safari jeep, while the Gal Oya boat safari is operated locally. Airport transfers are arranged as described in the itinerary.
Your passport must meet Sri Lanka's entry requirements, including the required period of validity. Requirements can vary according to nationality and may change, so please check the latest official guidance before departure.
Most travellers need an approved visa or Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA), depending on their nationality and the rules in force at the time of travel. Fees, eligibility and application procedures can change.
Please consult the official Sri Lankan immigration website or the Sri Lankan embassy or consulate in your country before travelling. We're happy to help point you towards the relevant information, but obtaining the correct travel documents remains your responsibility.

This tour combines cultural visits, wildlife experiences, walks and hikes, so a reasonable level of fitness is recommended.
Expect early starts, walking in warm and humid conditions, uneven or sometimes slippery paths, and cooler mornings in the highlands. Horton Plains and the walks in the hill country can be demanding depending on the route and weather.
There are also some long road journeys. You don't need to be an experienced trekker, but you should be comfortable spending time outdoors and walking for several hours at a time. If you have concerns about a particular hike, please discuss them with us before booking.
Because of the terrain, remote accommodation, vehicle transfers and outdoor activities, this itinerary may not be suitable for travellers with significantly reduced mobility.
If you have accessibility needs or other requirements that could affect your participation, please contact us before booking. We'll discuss the itinerary honestly and help you decide whether this trip is a good fit.
Please avoid sending sensitive medical or personal information through a general contact form. If you need to discuss something confidential, contact us directly to arrange an appropriate way to do so.
We strongly recommend arranging comprehensive travel insurance as soon as you book your trip. Your policy should cover medical expenses, emergency evacuation and repatriation, cancellation and interruption, and the activities you plan to take part in.
Please check that your policy covers hiking and any other relevant activities, and review its exclusions and limits carefully. Travel insurance is not included in the tour price.
We'll request your insurance and emergency-contact details before departure. Please make sure your cover is valid for the full duration of your trip.
Your tour includes accommodation, transport, the meals and activities specified in the itinerary, and entrance fees for included activities. Optional activities, meals not listed as included, drinks, tips, souvenirs, laundry, visa fees and personal expenses are not included unless explicitly stated.
It's useful to carry some cash in Sri Lanka, particularly in smaller towns and rural areas. ATMs are available in many towns, but access can be limited in more remote locations. Keep some small notes handy for local purchases and tips.
Your additional spending will depend on your eating habits, optional activities and personal purchases. We'll provide more practical advice on money and what to pack before departure.
We believe the best journeys leave room for curiosity, local encounters and moments that aren't simply another stop on a checklist.
This itinerary brings together well-known highlights and less-visited corners of Sri Lanka, with time to walk, explore and experience the country's varied landscapes.
