Kandy/Haputale
The Pekoe Trail takes you through Sri Lanka’s tea country on foot, linking tea plantations, forest paths, rural villages and mountain landscapes. Walking it over several days gives you time to experience these places beyond the usual viewpoints and roadside stops.
But planning a multi-day hike here takes more than choosing which stages to walk. You also need to work out where to stay, how to reach each trailhead, what to do with your luggage and how to adapt when the weather or your energy levels change.
Our 14-day Pekoe Trail itinerary from Kandy to Haputale brings these elements together. It covers the first 13 stages of the trail, with comfortable accommodation, daily transport and luggage transfers arranged for you.
You can join a small group or travel privately, with the flexibility to adjust the pace along the way.
The idea is simple: spend your time walking through Sri Lanka’s highlands, not worrying about the logistics.
There is no single way to hike the Pekoe Trail. Some people prefer to walk individual stages on day trips, while others want to cover as much of the route as possible.
This itinerary is designed for travelers who want to spend two weeks exploring the highlands without having to organise every detail themselves.
Rather than treating the trail as a checklist, the journey combines regular walking days with practical arrangements that make a longer trip easier to manage.
A route that unfolds gradually
Starting in Kandy, you make your way into Sri Lanka’s highlands and tea-growing regions. The scenery changes as you progress, from wooded paths and rural settlements to rolling tea plantations and cooler mountain landscapes.
Comfort between hiking days
You stay in selected hotels and tea estate properties rather than carrying camping equipment or relying on basic trail accommodation. Your luggage is transferred between overnight stops, so you can walk with just what you need for the day.
Room to adapt
Weather, terrain and individual fitness all influence how a hiking day feels. With transport support available, there is some flexibility to shorten a walk or adjust the day’s arrangements when necessary. The exact alternatives depend on the stage and local conditions.
A small group, or a private journey
Join a small group if you enjoy sharing the experience with other travelers, or choose a private departure if you prefer greater control over your schedule.
The result is a structured hiking holiday that leaves room to enjoy the journey itself.
The Pekoe Trail is more than a collection of walking routes. Over several days, you begin to notice how the landscape, communities and rhythm of life change as you move through the highlands.
You walk between tea fields and forest, pass through villages and see working landscapes that are easy to overlook when travelling by vehicle. Some days bring open views across the hills; others are about the details along the path.
The experience is also different from a conventional sightseeing tour. You spend much of the day outdoors, and the landscape becomes part of the journey rather than a stop along the way.
By the time you reach Haputale, you will have experienced a substantial section of the Pekoe Trail on foot.
This itinerary covers the first 13 stages, not the entire 22-stage trail. If you would like to explore more of the route, we can discuss extending the journey.
For a broader introduction to the route, read our complete guide to hiking the Pekoe Trail in Sri Lanka.
Our small-group option is a good fit if you enjoy walking with other travelers but prefer a smaller setting to a large organised tour.
Departures are subject to the minimum group size. See the booking section below for what happens if a departure does not reach the minimum.
Prefer to travel at your own pace? You can arrange the same journey as a private tour, whether you are travelling as a couple, with friends or on your own.
A private departure offers more flexibility in daily timing and walking arrangements, subject to trail conditions, accommodation availability and the practicalities of the route.
Both options include the logistical support that makes a multi-day hiking trip easier to organise.
The walking is the main event. Getting between stages and finding somewhere to stay should not take up your attention.
We arrange transport and luggage transfers throughout the journey, with your driver supporting the daily trail logistics.
A typical hiking day works like this:
You do not need to carry your main suitcase from one hotel to the next, and you do not have to organise transport independently at every stage.
Daily walking distances and arrangements can be adjusted where the route and conditions allow. If you prefer to skip or shorten a section, we can discuss the available alternatives.
This is a supported hiking holiday, not a self-sufficient trek. You should still be comfortable walking on uneven ground and spending several hours outdoors on hiking days.
After a day on the trail, a comfortable place to rest makes a difference.
We select accommodation with an emphasis on comfort, location and atmosphere. Depending on the overnight stop, this may mean a comfortable midrange hotel or a characterful tea estate property.
The aim is to make the journey enjoyable without turning it into a luxury-only experience.
Room arrangements
Higher-category accommodation may be possible at selected stops, subject to availability and any additional cost.
Accommodation is an important part of planning the Pekoe Trail, as not every stage has convenient places to stay directly beside the route. Our arrangements take the overnight stops and daily transport into account.
Meals are arranged to keep the hiking days straightforward.
Breakfast and dinner are served at your accommodation, while packed lunches are provided for hiking days.
A typical packed lunch may include fresh fruit, sandwiches or rice dishes, along with local snacks or bakery items. The exact contents vary by location and availability.
The focus is on practical meals that travel well and give you the energy to keep walking, rather than elaborate picnic spreads.
If you have dietary requirements, please let us know before booking so we can check what can be accommodated.
Would you like to spend a little longer in Sri Lanka’s highlands? Depending on your dates and preferences, we can help arrange additional experiences around the main hiking journey.
Extra nights in Kandy (or rest of Sri Lanka)
Arrive a little earlier to explore Kandy before beginning the trail.
A scenic train journey
Add a train journey from Hatton where the schedule and route work with your itinerary. Train tickets are subject to availability and are not included in the standard tour price.
Additional Pekoe Trail stages
If you have more time, we can explore extending the hiking itinerary beyond the first 13 stages.
Accommodation upgrades
Prefer a particular hotel category or a more distinctive tea estate stay? Let us know what matters to you, and we can check the available options and additional costs.
This journey suits travelers who enjoy walking and want to experience Sri Lanka’s highlands at a more active pace than a conventional sightseeing holiday.
You may enjoy it if you:
You do not need to be an ultra-runner or an experienced mountaineer. However, you should have a reasonable level of fitness and be comfortable walking for several hours on uneven trails, on consecutive days.
This is not a luxury retreat, nor is it designed for hikers whose main goal is to complete the entire Pekoe Trail as quickly as possible. It is a supported hiking journey for travelers who want to enjoy the route as they go.
Sri Lanka’s highlands can be explored throughout the year, but the weather varies by season and location.
For this route, December to April and July to September are useful periods to consider when planning your trip. Conditions can still vary, and rain is possible even during generally favourable months.
Expect cooler temperatures than on the coast, occasional mist in the mornings and the possibility of rain on the trail. Wet weather can affect underfoot conditions and visibility, so flexibility is important.
The best dates for you will also depend on accommodation availability, your preferred departure and how much flexibility you have with travel dates.
Travelling from Kandy towards Haputale gives the itinerary a natural sense of progression through the highlands.
Rather than staying in one area and making separate day trips, you move through the landscape over several days. The scenery changes as you go, and walking allows you to experience the transitions between tea-growing areas, forests and settlements more closely.
You also gain a different perspective on the distances between places. A stretch of countryside that might pass quickly through a vehicle window becomes part of your day on foot.
That is one of the reasons to choose a multi-day Pekoe Trail itinerary rather than simply visiting tea country by car.
This tour is designed primarily as a small-group shared experience, with a private option available.
The price depends on the selected departure, accommodation availability and whether you choose the small-group or private option. Please refer to the current departure and pricing details for the applicable rate and payment terms.
It depends on how much of the trail you want to cover and how you prefer to travel. This itinerary allows 14 days and 13 nights for the first 13 stages, with accommodation and transport arranged along the way.
You can also hike individual stages as day trips or plan a longer journey to cover additional sections.
No. The Pekoe Trail consists of 22 stages. This itinerary covers the first 13 stages, travelling from Kandy towards Haputale.
If you would like to walk more of the trail, we can discuss the possibility of extending your trip.
You should have a reasonable level of fitness and be comfortable walking for several hours on uneven terrain. The route is not designed as an extreme trek, but consecutive hiking days can be tiring.
Your preparation should take into account the final daily distances, elevation changes and the amount of walking you normally do.
Not necessarily. The tour includes support from a vehicle, which can provide some flexibility when you need to shorten or skip a section.
However, alternatives depend on the stage, road access, weather and the day’s logistics.
No. Your main luggage is transferred between overnight stays. You will need a daypack for essentials such as water, sun protection, rainwear, snacks and anything else you need while walking.
Yes. A private departure is available for travelers who prefer to walk with their own party and have more flexibility in daily arrangements. A supplement applies.
You stay in selected comfortable hotels and tea estate properties, depending on the overnight location. The accommodation is chosen to work with the route and the practicalities of each hiking day.
Yes. We can help arrange additional accommodation, transfers and activities in Sri Lanka before and after the hike. Let us know your travel dates and plans when you enquire.
There are many ways to experience Sri Lanka’s tea country. You can drive between viewpoints, visit a tea factory and admire the hills from the roadside.
Or you can spend two weeks walking through them.
On foot, the distances feel different. You notice the paths between the plantations, the villages along the way and the small details that are easy to miss when travelling by vehicle.
With accommodation, transport and luggage transfers arranged, you can focus on the walking and the experience of moving through the highlands day by day.

Welcome to Sri Lanka! Upon arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), you’ll meet our local team for a complimentary group transfer to Kandy, where your Pekoe Trail adventure begins.
Please arrange your flight to arrive by 11:00 am at the latest, as the transfer is organised for the group rather than individual arrivals. Once in Kandy, you can check in, settle into your hotel and take some time to recover from your journey. There’s no hiking planned for today, so you can arrive without feeling that you need to rush straight into the adventure.
If you need help arranging additional nights before or after the tour, we’ll be happy to assist with your travel plans.
Today, you’ll get your first taste of Kandy before setting off on the Pekoe Trail. The city is an interesting introduction to Sri Lanka’s central highlands, with its busy streets, local markets and rich cultural heritage. We’ll explore some of its highlights before heading into the surrounding hills.
A short transfer takes you towards Hantana, where the Pekoe Trail begins. The first stage introduces you to the landscapes that will accompany you over the coming days, with forest paths, tea-covered slopes and views across the hills around Kandy. Depending on the time available and the group’s pace, you may also walk part of the following stage.
This is your chance to settle into the rhythm of hiking and get to know your fellow travellers. There’s plenty more trail ahead, so today is about making a comfortable start rather than covering as much ground as possible.
By the end of the day, you’ll leave the city behind and head towards your accommodation in the Galaha or Delthota area.
Leaving the surroundings of Kandy behind, you’ll venture further into the central highlands, where the trail leads through rural communities, green hillsides and increasingly extensive tea-growing areas. The landscape changes gradually, and walking gives you time to appreciate details that are easy to miss when travelling by car.
Along the way, you’ll pass local homes and working estates, following paths that connect communities and plantations. There will be opportunities to pause for a drink, take photographs or simply enjoy the views before continuing.
The exact distance covered today will depend on the final stage plan and trail conditions. Our local team will take care of the transfers and luggage arrangements, leaving you free to concentrate on the walk.
After your hike, you’ll travel to your next accommodation and enjoy dinner before another day on the trail.
As the journey continues, tea becomes an increasingly familiar part of the scenery.
Today’s hike continues through the central highlands, with a mixture of plantation paths, rural tracks and open stretches where the hills seem to roll on into the distance. The terrain varies along the way, so expect some uphill and downhill sections rather than a completely flat walk.
There’s no need to rush through the day. We’ll build in time for breaks and photographs, while your support vehicle and local team take care of the practical arrangements around the hike.
After your hike, you’ll travel to your next accommodation and enjoy dinner before another day on the trail.
By now, you’ll have settled into the rhythm of walking, and the days begin to feel less about reaching a particular point and more about experiencing the landscape along the way. Today takes you further into Sri Lanka’s tea country, where expansive plantations, winding estate roads and views across the surrounding hills become a familiar sight.
As with the previous days, the precise sections covered will depend on the group’s walking pace. The aim is to make steady progress without turning the journey into a race.
After the hike, you’ll transfer to your next stay, where you can relax and recharge for the following day.
Today, you continue through the highlands towards Hatton, one of the important towns in Sri Lanka’s tea-growing region. The surrounding countryside is characterised by steep green slopes, tea estates and communities whose daily lives are closely connected to the industry.
You’ll spend the day walking another section of the Pekoe Trail, with time to appreciate the scenery and the changing character of the region.
Your support team will coordinate the trail transfers and transport your luggage to the next accommodation, so you won’t need to carry anything beyond what you need for the day.
You’ll arrive in the Hatton area in time to settle in and enjoy the evening. Tomorrow is set aside for a break from hiking, giving you the chance to rest or explore the surroundings.
After several consecutive days of hiking, today is yours to enjoy at a slower pace. You can spend the morning relaxing at your accommodation, catch up on some reading or simply enjoy the cooler air of the highlands without having to lace up your hiking boots.
If you’d prefer to make the most of the day, there are optional activities to consider. You could join a local cooking class and learn more about Sri Lankan food, or head out to discover one of the waterfalls in the surrounding countryside, such as Gartmore Falls or Fairlawn Falls, subject to access and local conditions.
These activities are optional and can be arranged according to your interests. If you’d rather do very little, that’s perfectly fine, too. The next part of the journey has more walking in store, and a little downtime can make all the difference.
After your rest day, it’s time to return to the trail and continue through the central highlands. The landscape remains closely tied to tea cultivation, but each section has its own character, with different views, settlements and paths to discover along the way.
Today, you’ll continue walking through the countryside, moving between plantation tracks, rural paths and open sections with views across the surrounding hills.
By now, you’ll probably have found a walking rhythm that works for you. There’s time to take in the scenery and enjoy the company of the group, while still allowing everyone a little space to walk at a comfortable pace.
Once the hike is complete, your driver will take you back to your accommodation.
Today’s hike takes you further through the tea-growing highlands, passing working estates and small communities along the way.
The terrain and walking conditions vary, with some challenging uphill or downhill sections. Comfortable hiking shoes, water and protection from both sun and rain are important throughout the journey.
At the end of the day, you’ll transfer to your accommodation and have time to relax before continuing towards the higher and more open landscapes ahead.
As you continue along the Pekoe Trail, the landscape begins to change once again. The highlands are not just endless tea plantations; elevation, vegetation and the character of the countryside vary from one section to the next.
Today’s walk takes you further into this changing terrain, with stretches of open countryside and views across the surrounding mountains.
After completing the planned section, you’ll meet your driver and continue to your accommodation in Ohiya for the evening. Please note, the accommodation options in the region are fairly limited and we do our best to secure the most comfortable one.
Today brings one of the highland highlights of the journey as you explore the Horton Plains area. This elevated landscape is quite different from the tea estates you’ve walked through over the previous days, with open grassland, patches of forest and a cooler mountain environment.
The plan is to combine the relevant section of Stage 11 with the World’s End loop in Horton Plains National Park. World’s End is known for its dramatic escarpment and expansive views, although mist can sometimes obscure the panorama, particularly later in the day.
For those looking for a more demanding alternative, a hike towards Kirigalpoththa, the second-highest mountain in Sri Lanka, may be possible as an optional activity. This is a more strenuous undertaking and requires separate assessment of fitness, weather, access and timing. It should not be considered a guaranteed substitute for the planned trail section.
Whichever option is selected, today is about experiencing a different side of Sri Lanka’s highlands before continuing the journey.
Today, you continue along the Pekoe Trail towards the Haputale area, where the character of the highlands gradually changes once again.
After nearly two weeks of travelling and hiking, you’ll have experienced the central highlands at a different pace from most visitors. You’ll have crossed tea estates on foot, passed through small communities and seen how quickly the scenery can change as you move from one valley to the next.
The day’s walking follows the agreed Stage 12 route, with your support team coordinating the trail transfers and luggage arrangements to your accommodation in Haputale.
Today’s hike follows the planned section of Stage 13. Along the way, there is more time to enjoy the views, take photographs and reflect on the distance you’ve covered since beginning near Kandy.
Spend the evening relaxing at your Haputale accommodation and enjoying your last night in the highlands.
After breakfast, your Pekoe Trail journey comes to an end. Depending on your onward plans, you can continue exploring Sri Lanka at your own pace.
If you have a few extra days, we recommend considering an extension in the surrounding hill country. There is still plenty to discover, from waterfalls and quiet villages to historic buildings and further hiking routes.
You could visit Diyaluma Falls, explore a traditional pottery-making village, enjoy a picnic lunch followed by a river bath in a suitable location, or visit Adisham Bungalow, a historic country house that now functions as a monastery and is open to visitors at designated times.
For those who would like to continue hiking, the next Pekoe Trail stages towards Ella offer a natural extension to the trip. We can help plan the additional walking and arrange accommodation in Ella. If you continue on foot towards Ella, we also offer complimentary transfer to trailhead and luggage transfer to your accommodation in Ella, subject to the agreed extension arrangements.
Let us know what you have in mind, and we’ll be happy to help organise the next part of your Sri Lankan adventure.
Planning a multi-day hike involves a few more details than an ordinary holiday. In the following sections, you'll find the practical information you need to prepare for our Pekoe Trail hiking tour in Sri Lanka, from accommodation and meals to fitness, transport and travel arrangements.
Throughout the journey, you'll stay in a selection of comfortable midrange hotels, holiday bungalows and characterful tea estate properties. We choose accommodation for its location, atmosphere, facilities and overall value, keeping the practicalities of the hiking route in mind.
Rooms have private en-suite bathrooms. Facilities vary between properties, and a swimming pool is available at some, but not all, of our overnight stops.
On the small-group tour, accommodation is based on sharing a double or twin room with another participant. If you're travelling as a couple or with friends, let us know your rooming preferences when booking. Single-room arrangements may be available for a supplement.
Please keep in mind that accommodation standards and service in Sri Lanka can differ from what you're used to at home. We select places that offer a comfortable stay, but service may be more relaxed and facilities less uniform than in some other destinations.
All accommodation is subject to availability at the time of confirmation. If a planned property is unavailable, a suitable alternative will be arranged.
Breakfast and dinner are served at your accommodation, while lunch on hiking days is provided as a packed meal.
Sri Lankan food is an important part of travelling through the highlands, and meals may include rice and curry, vegetables, fresh fruit and other local dishes. Packed lunches are practical rather than elaborate, helping you refuel during the day on the trail.
Vegetarian meals can be arranged if you let us know when booking. If you have other dietary requirements, such as vegan or gluten-free meals, or food allergies, please contact us before confirming your trip so we can discuss what can realistically be accommodated.
A private air-conditioned vehicle supports the journey, with the vehicle size depending on the final group size. The group is limited to 12 guests.
Your driver takes you to the trailheads and collects you at the agreed meeting points after your hikes. Your main luggage is transferred between overnight stops, so you won't need to carry your suitcase along the trail.
You'll need a comfortable daypack for water, snacks, sun protection, rainwear and other essentials. Keep in mind that some trail sections are remote, and vehicle access and pick-up points vary. Daily arrangements are planned around the route and local conditions.
Where practical, we can discuss shortening or skipping a hiking section if needed. However, alternatives depend on the stage, road access, weather and the day's logistics, so not every section can be adjusted in the same way.
You don't need to be an experienced trekker, but you should have a reasonable level of fitness and feel comfortable walking for several hours on consecutive days.
The Pekoe Trail follows a variety of paths through tea plantations, rural areas, forests and hilly terrain. Depending on the stage, you may encounter uneven ground, ascents and descents, exposed sections, mud or slippery paths after rain.
Walking distances and difficulty vary from day to day. Weather, temperature and the terrain can also make a route feel more demanding than expected. You should be prepared for warm conditions, sun exposure and occasional rain, as well as cooler mornings in the highlands.
This is a supported hiking holiday, not a race to complete the trail. Nevertheless, transport support does not replace the need to be comfortable on foot and prepared for the planned walks.
If you're unsure whether the itinerary is right for your fitness level, get in touch before booking. We'll be happy to discuss the route and its demands with you.
You won't need camping equipment or a large trekking pack. Your main luggage travels with the support vehicle, and you carry a daypack during the hikes.
We recommend bringing:
Break in your hiking shoes before the trip. Conditions can change quickly in the hills, so having a rain layer and footwear with good traction is more useful than packing for perfect weather.
Before travelling, check that your passport meets Sri Lanka's current entry requirements and remains valid for the required period. Make sure you also have any necessary visas or travel authorisations.
Entry requirements, visa fees and application procedures can change and depend on your nationality. Please check the latest official guidance before departure rather than relying on information from third-party websites.
You can start with the official Sri Lanka Department of Immigration and Emigration website. If you have questions about your specific circumstances, contact the relevant Sri Lankan embassy or consulate.
It is your responsibility to ensure that your travel documents are valid and that you meet the entry requirements for your journey.
Health recommendations depend on your medical history, vaccination status, travel plans and the areas you intend to visit. We recommend seeking professional travel-health advice well before departure.
Consult your doctor or a travel-medicine clinic about recommended vaccinations, insect-bite prevention, any medication you may need and precautions relevant to hiking in Sri Lanka's highlands.
Bring any prescription medication you use regularly, along with sufficient supplies for the trip. It is also sensible to carry personal essentials for minor issues such as blisters, although you should seek medical attention when needed.
This information is intended as general guidance only and is not a substitute for professional medical advice. Health recommendations and entry requirements may change.
This trip involves walking on uneven terrain, getting in and out of vehicles, and spending several hours outdoors. Some sections may include steep slopes, steps, muddy paths or other obstacles.
As a result, the tour may not be suitable for people with reduced mobility or certain accessibility requirements. Suitability depends on the individual and the specific support needed.
If you have concerns about accessibility, mobility or any other requirement that could affect your participation, please contact us before booking. We'll discuss the itinerary and available arrangements with you.
Please avoid sending sensitive medical or personal information through the general contact form. If you need to discuss something confidential, contact us directly and we'll advise on an appropriate way to proceed.
We strongly recommend arranging travel insurance as soon as you book your trip. This gives you the opportunity to understand the coverage available for unexpected events before your departure approaches.
Check that your policy covers medical expenses, emergency evacuation and repatriation, trip cancellation or interruption, and the hiking activities included in your itinerary. Review any exclusions, limits and requirements carefully.
Travel insurance is not included in the tour price. Before departure, we'll ask you to provide your insurance details and an emergency contact.
Your tour price covers the services listed in the itinerary and booking conditions. You should still budget for personal expenses and any items that are not included.
Depending on your preferences, additional expenses may include:
We will explain any optional services and applicable extra costs before you commit to them. Please refer to your final itinerary and booking confirmation for the precise inclusions and exclusions.
We believe the best journeys leave room to experience a place, not just pass through it. On the Pekoe Trail, that means time on foot, changing landscapes, encounters with everyday life and the chance to appreciate Sri Lanka's tea country beyond the usual stops.
We take care of the main logistics, from accommodation and transport to luggage transfers, so you can concentrate on the walking and the places along the way.
We also work with local businesses and partners who help make these journeys possible. Our aim is to create thoughtful travel experiences that are enjoyable for our guests and support the people who make them happen.
The trip is organised, but it isn't about rushing from one highlight to the next. It's about experiencing the highlands one walking day at a time.
To enquire about the Pekoe Trail tour, please use our booking or enquiry form and tell us as much as you can about your preferred travel dates, group size and rooming preferences.
The small-group departure requires a minimum of 4 participants and accommodates a maximum of 12 guests. If the minimum is not reached, we'll discuss the available alternatives with you, which may include operating the trip privately at a different price.
A deposit is required to confirm your booking. Accommodation is subject to availability, and any temporary holds depend on the individual properties.
The minimum age for the shared group tour is 18 years. Participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Parents should consider the daily walking distances and terrain when deciding whether the trip is suitable for their child.
Need help arranging additional nights, airport transfers or other travel plans before or after the hike? Let us know. We're happy to discuss options that fit around your itinerary.
If anything is unclear or you'd like to check whether this hiking tour is right for you, please get in touch before booking.
Tell us a little about your travel plans, and we'll help you understand the route, the walking requirements and the arrangements involved.
