Kandy/Hatton
Your Pekoe Trail Hiking tour begins in Kandy, a place that most travelers know for its temples, traffic, and constant movement. It’s vibrant, it’s intense, and it’s a perfect starting point — because what comes next feels like a complete shift.
Within a short drive, the city slowly fades behind you. The roads narrow, the air cools, and without really noticing when it happens, you find yourself stepping onto a quiet trail. This is where the Pekoe Trail begins, and more importantly, this is where your pace begins to change.
Over the next four days, you walk from Kandy into the highlands, gradually making your way toward Hatton. You don’t rush it, and you don’t need to prove anything. Some parts you’ll walk fully, others you might shorten, and that’s exactly how it’s meant to be.
You can do this as part of a small group, sharing the experience with a few like-minded travelers, or you can choose to keep it entirely private and move fully on your own terms. This short trip focuses on the first 5 stages of a total of 22 – click to read our complete guide to hiking the Pekoe Trail.
There isn’t just one way to walk this route, and that’s intentional.
Most travelers choose the small group option, which keeps the experience intimate, but still gives you that shared energy — conversations over dinner, different perspectives on the trail, and the quiet understanding that everyone is here for something similar.
At the same time, if you prefer more space or flexibility, you can take this journey as a private experience. In that case, everything becomes even more adaptable — your pace, your timing, your daily structure — all shaped around how you feel rather than how a group moves.
Even in a group setting, the structure of our Pekoe Trail hiking tour remains flexible. You don’t need to keep up with the fastest walker, and you don’t need to push through a long day just to say you’ve finished it. Some people walk further, some take it slower, and both approaches are equally valid here.
The key difference is that the logistics are handled for you. Your luggage is transferred between stays, your driver is always nearby, and if at any point you feel like shortening the day, there’s always a simple way to do so.
What you’re left with is the part that actually matters — walking through the landscape, without distraction.
This is where most hikes become complicated.
Yours won’t.

There are many ways to see Sri Lanka.
You can drive through tea country, stop at viewpoints, take photos, and move on.
Or you can walk it.
One shows you the view.
The other lets you feel it.
When you walk, the distances mean something. The transitions feel real. And the places in between — the ones most people never notice — become part of the experience.
And once you notice, everything feels different.

This hiking experience is designed for travelers searching for:
The day starts in Kandy, but it doesn’t stay there for long. A short drive takes you to Hantana, where the Pekoe Trail officially begins, and from the first steps, the difference is clear.
The trail eases you in gently, moving through forested sections and tea-covered hills, with occasional openings that reveal wider views across the landscape. It’s not a demanding start, and that’s intentional — it gives you time to settle into the rhythm of walking.
Some will complete the full first stage, while others may choose to stop earlier. There’s no right or wrong version of the day.
By late afternoon, you arrive at your stay near Galaha/Delthota, where things slow down even further.
This is the day where the landscape really begins to define itself.
The forest sections gradually give way to open tea estates, and the trails start to weave through areas where daily life continues as it always has. You pass workers in the fields, small homes along the الطريق, and stretches where it’s just you and the hills.
The walking feels more natural now. You’ve found your pace, and the day flows more easily.
Distances remain flexible, depending on how the group feels, but the experience stays consistent — steady, quiet, and immersive.
By the third day, something shifts.
Walking is no longer something you’re “doing.” It becomes something that simply carries you forward.
You start noticing more — the sound of the wind moving through the tea bushes, the way the light changes across the hills, the silence between villages. It’s often the day people remember most, not because it’s dramatically different, but because it feels deeper.
The trail continues through tea estates and open ridgelines, and again, the distance can be adapted depending on energy levels.
The last day brings wider views and a gradual descent toward Hatton.
There’s no pressure to rush this part. Some prefer to walk a full stage and finish strong, while others take it slower, enjoying the final hours on the trail without thinking about distance at all.
Eventually, you arrive in Hatton, where the journey naturally comes to an end.
For many, this is also where the next experience begins — the train ride through the highlands, which is often considered one of the most scenic in Sri Lanka.
