Namibia Photography Tour through contrasting landscapes

Namibia is a remarkable destination for photographers and curious travellers alike. Its vast horizons, striking contrasts and ever-changing light create a landscape that feels different at every turn. From the deep red dunes of Sossusvlei and the ancient terrain of the Namib Desert to the immense Fish River Canyon, the abandoned buildings of Kolmanskop and the windswept Skeleton Coast, the country offers extraordinary subjects for your camera — and plenty of reasons to put it down and simply take it all in.

Beyond its landscapes, Namibia reveals a rich diversity of wildlife and cultures. In Etosha National Park, we explore open savannas and waterholes where elephants, giraffes, zebras and other wildlife gather. In the country’s remote regions, encounters with local communities offer opportunities to learn about different ways of life, traditions and relationships with the land, always with respect for the people who call these places home.

Namibia Photography Tour - Himba Tribe

This 18-day Namibia photography tour brings together the country’s southern and northern highlights in one extended journey. We’ll travel from the red sands of the Kalahari and the fossil-rich landscapes around Keetmanshoop to the Atlantic coast, the dunes of Sossusvlei and the rugged scenery of Damaraland, before ending with wildlife viewing in Etosha National Park.

Along the way, we’ll discover the distinctive Quiver Trees, look for the wild horses of Garub, explore Kolmanskop’s sand-filled buildings and experience the changing atmosphere of the desert from dawn to dusk. There will be opportunities to observe, explore and photograph these places in different light, with time to appreciate the details as well as the wider landscapes.

You don’t need to be an experienced photographer to join. Whether you’re travelling with a camera or simply enjoy nature, unusual places and the stories behind them, this journey offers a varied perspective on Namibia.

Travel in a small group, sharing the same itinerary and included activities, with a choice of accommodation to suit your preferences. Opt for a budget-conscious combination of campsites, tented camps and guesthouses, or choose the lodge upgrade for greater comfort.

Come and discover Namibia through its landscapes, wildlife and people — one remarkable place at a time.

Highlights Along the Way

Windhoek → Kalahari → Keetmanshoop → Fish River Canyon → Orange River → Lüderitz & Kolmanskop → Aus & Duwisib → Sossusvlei → Walvis Bay & Swakopmund → Damaraland → Etosha National Park → Windhoek

This journey combines the dramatic landscapes of southern Namibia with the Atlantic coast, the rugged wilderness of Damaraland and the wildlife-rich plains of Etosha National Park. Starting and ending in Windhoek, the route takes us through some of the country’s most distinctive regions, with time to explore and photograph each along the way.

The quieter, more remote south

Landscapes shaped by time, wind and solitude

The journey begins in the Kalahari, where red sand, sparse vegetation and open horizons create a distinctive desert landscape. Further south, we visit the extraordinary Quiver Tree Forest and the fossil-rich landscapes around Keetmanshoop, before reaching the vast Fish River Canyon.

On the Atlantic coast, the abandoned buildings of Kolmanskop tell the story of Namibia’s diamond-mining past. Sand slowly reclaiming empty rooms and corridors makes this one of the country’s most evocative places to explore with a camera.

We’ll also look for the wild horses around Garub and travel through the striking landscapes of southern Namibia before heading north.

Sossusvlei and the Namib Desert

Sand dunes, long shadows and changing light

The towering dunes of the Namib Desert are among Namibia’s most recognisable landscapes. We’ll explore the Sossusvlei and Deadvlei area, where pale clay pans, ancient dead trees and deep-orange dunes create striking contrasts.

We’ll also have opportunities to photograph the desert around sunset and experience the changing light across the sand.

The Atlantic coast and Skeleton Coast

Where the desert meets the ocean

Namibia’s coast offers a different atmosphere altogether. In Swakopmund and Walvis Bay, we’ll have the opportunity to experience the marine environment on a kayaking excursion and explore the dramatic dunes around Sandwich Harbour by 4×4.

Further north, the Skeleton Coast reveals a remote, windswept landscape, with a visit to Cape Cross and its large Cape fur seal colony before we continue into Damaraland.

Damaraland and desert-adapted wildlife

Rugged mountains, open plains and a different side of Namibia

Damaraland is known for its stark mountain scenery, geological formations and wildlife adapted to arid conditions. Depending on local conditions and availability, there may be opportunities to join an optional tracking excursion in search of desert-adapted elephants or rhinos, or learn more about the region’s cultural heritage.

Etosha National Park

Wildlife around waterholes and open plains

The final part of our journey takes us to Etosha National Park, one of southern Africa’s best-known wildlife destinations. We’ll spend time exploring the park, looking for elephants, giraffes, zebras, antelopes and predators, with sightings always dependent on nature and conditions.

Accommodation: choose your travel style

Everyone follows the same itinerary and shares the included activities. The difference is where you sleep.

Standard accommodation

A mix of campsites, tented camps and guesthouses, chosen to keep the trip more budget-conscious while retaining the character of the places we visit. Camping equipment is provided, including a tent, mattress, pillow and sleeping bag.

Lodge upgrade

For those who prefer more comfort, the upgrade provides private ensuite rooms at the relevant overnight stops. Accommodation varies by location, and the same itinerary and included activities apply.

Where practical, both options can share meals and spend time together at the camps.

Is this trip for you?

This journey covers a large part of Namibia and involves substantial distances between destinations. Most days will include several hours on the road, often on gravel roads, and the landscape can feel remote and exposed. The reward is the variety: desert scenery, unusual geological formations, coastal wildlife, cultural encounters and game viewing in Etosha.

The trip is a good fit if you enjoy nature, photography, road journeys and places that feel far removed from everyday life. You don’t need advanced photography skills or specialist equipment, but patience, curiosity and flexibility will help you get the most out of it.

Day 01 Arrival - Windhoek

Welcome to Namibia!

Upon arrival at Windhoek International Airport, you’ll be picked up and transferred to our lovely lodge at the doorsteps of the Kalahari Desert, about 45 minutes drive away.

For the rest of the day, you may wish to relax by the pool, explore the surroundings on well-marked hiking trails, or watch the animals from a hide. After dinner, you may visit the hide to observe nocturnal animals such as jackals and porcupine

  • Included Meals: Dinner

Day 02 Kalahari Desert

Today we will continue our journey deeper into the Kalahari Desert, where giant red termite castles dot the landscape.

Kalahari, famous for its red sand, generally known as a desert, is now classified as semi-desert. Large parts of the sandy areas are covered with grass and occasional acacias. The characteristic of the Kalahari is the red longitudinal dunes, which run parallel to the prevailing wind direction and, unlike the dunes of the Namib Desert, no longer migrate.

After settling in, we’ll have the opportunity to hike in the dunes and spot some animals. In the late afternoon, we’ll go on a fantastic sunset nature drive with cheetah excursion and sundowner on the dunes.

We will be looking out for giraffes, kudus, zebras, oryx and other wildlife, and get a closer look at cheetahs during an educational excursion, learning more about these remarkable predators and capturing memorable photographs. We will then end the day on a high dune, watching the sun set over the vast landscape while enjoying refreshments and traditional Namibian snacks.

  • Standard Accommodation: Bagatelle Kalahari Ranch Campsite
  • Lodge Upgrade: Bagatelle Kalahari Ranch Garden Room

Day 03 Keetmanskop - Quiver Tree Forest and ancient fossils
Early in the morning, we’ll have the opportunity to watch the meerkats wake up on a self-guided hike. Alternatively, you may want to take a sunrise safari on horseback or take a morning guided walk with the indigenous people of the Kalahari (San Bushmen) to their demonstrational village and learn about the ancient traditions and secrets of their ancestors (own expense).
After breakfast, we’ll transfer to the striking Quiver Tree Forest near Keetmanshoop. These unusual trees, silhouetted against the sky, make a memorable subject, particularly in the softer light of morning and evening. We’ll also visit the Mesosaurus fossil site with a local guide and learn more about the area’s ancient geological history.
Tonight we will have the chance for a starry night photography session.
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

  • Lodge Upgrade: Quivertree Forest Rest Camp Igloo Bungalows
  • Included Activities: Sunrise visit to Meerkats, Quiver Trees, and Mesosaurus fossils guided tour

For the rest of the afternoon until dinner time, you may choose the explore the surroundings on foot, join a sunset drive offered by the farm (own expense), or just relax by the pool.

Day 09 Sossusvlei and Deadvlei

We set out to explore the dunes of Sossusvlei and the striking clay pan of Deadvlei, with its ancient dead trees set against pale ground and towering orange sand. We’ll have time to walk and photograph the landscape, with the exact schedule shaped by the light and conditions.

We’ll rise early today to watch the sunrise over the red dunes of the Namib Desert, a truly epic sight. We’ll hop in our vehicle while it's still dark and drive the 60 km through the sand dunes towards Sossusvlei public car park. From here it’s a short walk to the base of the Big Daddy, the highest dune in the park. The climb would take anywhere from 30 minutes to 1 hour depending on your fitness level and determination, but the tough hike on soft sand is worth it all. We’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views and a sense of achievement. After admiring the 360-degree views, we’ll run off the side of the dune into the Deadvlei and explore the salt pan filled with dead camel thorn trees. If you don’t want to hike or want to have more time for photography in Deadvlei, you can take the 4x4 shuttle into Deadvlei and back to the parking lot.

We’ll spend most of the day exploring the desert floor and sand dunes on foot as this is the best way and with a bit of luck we might spot wild animals like oryx. We’ll stop at Dune 45 and 40 on our way out of the national park and take our time to explore and photograph the beauty of the desert for as long as we need. We’ll have breakfast and lunch at appropriate spots in the park.

Our last stop will be Sesriem Canyon before we exit the park and continue to our next accommodation, roughly 1 hour away, where we’ll enjoy the sunset and starry night in another stunning landscape at the base of the rugged mountain range.

In the afternoon, we will embark on a special safari in search of the tiny inhabitants of the desert dunes. While the untrained eye can only see sand, our guide will spot unique creatures like the Dancing White Lady, the Desert Chameleon, the sand-diving Gecko, and many more. No previous kayaking experience is necessary, fun and up-close encounters with the seals are guaranteed; pelicans, dolphins, and other mammals can be spotted if lucky. Optionally, you may choose to stay aboard the catamaran for a whale safari.

Accommodation

The accommodation on this tour is a combination of camping, glamping and good quality, lovely establishments specially chosen for their location, uniqueness, value for money, or excellent activities.

All rooms and tents on this trip are shared with two people in each room/tent. You'll have the option of a double bed or two single beds. Rooms vary slightly by layout and view and will be assigned based on booking order.

Solo travelers will be paired up with another participant. If you explicitly wish to have your own room/tent, or if we cannot find another participant to share that room/tent, there will be an extra surcharge as stated in the booking form.

We will be staying inside the national parks not to waste time traveling between places so that we can maximize the experience. You should not miss the experience of falling asleep under the African starry sky, hearing the hyenas or lions roaring in the distance, and being woken up in the morning by the unique African sunrise. Camping/Glamping is indispensable to Namibia like pizza is to Italy. However, to ensure that comfort is not neglected, accommodation with proper beds is planned whenever feasible, so we will have the best of both worlds.

Please note that this is Africa and one cannot expect the western standards in the places visited. Especially with respect to service, expect a lovely “laid back, unhurried” environment.

Meals

17 Breakfasts, 14 Lunches and 13 Dinners are included in the tour price as outlined in the itinerary.

On camping/glamping days, most meals will be prepared by our guide/cook. You will be surprised by what delicious food our guide can prepare over the campfire, including BBQ, stews, and pasta dishes. Lunches will generally be in the form of picnics/sandwiches, consisting of cold meat, cheese, fruits, and salads.

To even out the meals, whenever suitable, we exclude lunch and/or dinner to give you the freedom of choice and diversify the options. Our guides will be happy to recommend good restaurants on the days when lunch or/and dinner are not included.

Vegetarians can be catered for if you inform us upon booking, however, note that the options are extremely limited in Namibia. For other dietary requirements (vegan, gluten-free, allergies, etc.), please contact us to discuss the best course of action for you.
