Experience one of Sri Lanka’s most famous cultural celebrations with an overnight stay in the historic hill city of Kandy during the spectacular Kandy Esala Perahera.
This centuries-old procession honors the Sacred Tooth Relic and transforms the city into a dramatic display of ritual, music, and devotion.
Your journey begins with a scenic drive through Sri Lanka’s hill country before arriving in Kandy, home to the sacred Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic.
After checking in to your comfortable 4-star hotel, take some time to relax before the evening’s festivities begin.
In the late afternoon, head to the city center where reserved seating awaits along the main Perahera route. Seating along the parade route is limited and often sells out well in advance.
We recommend enjoying a late lunch before the event. Dinner will be provided as a packed meal since restaurants become very busy on festival nights.
As darkness falls, the procession begins. The streets fill with rhythmic drumming, traditional Kandyan dancers, whip crackers, fire performers, and beautifully decorated elephants illuminated with thousands of lights.
The parade unfolds slowly through the city, offering a rare opportunity to witness one of Asia’s most impressive living cultural traditions.
After the procession concludes, return to your hotel in Kandy for an overnight stay.
The following morning begins at a relaxed pace. After breakfast, explore the surrounding area with your guide. Possible stops include a peaceful hilltop Buddhist temple, a traditional tea factory, and time to browse for local handicrafts.
Later, continue to the scenic Ambuluwawa Biodiversity Complex, known for its distinctive tower and sweeping views across the surrounding mountains and valleys.
Lunch will be served at a welcoming village restaurant run by a local Sri Lankan family before the journey continues back toward the coast.
You will return in the evening with lasting memories of one of Sri Lanka’s most extraordinary cultural festivals.
The annual Esala Perahera in Kandy, Sri Lanka, is a vibrant Buddhist parade that lasts around 10 days in July/August. Centered around the Buddha’s tooth relic, a sacred object that is usually housed at the Temple of the Tooth in downtown Kandy. However, during the Kandy Perahera, the relic is paraded through the streets, accompanied by stunning performances that turn the parade into a cultural extravaganza not to be missed.
For ten glorious nights in July or August annually, the streets come alive with vibrant processions. Known as Perahera, these parades feature a captivating display of thousands of musicians, dancers, drummers, and talented performers. Amidst this enchanting extravaganza, elegantly adorned hundreds of elephants and majestic tuskers gracefully march along, carrying the revered tooth relic in a beautifully adorned casket.
The grand finale of the festival takes place with a water cutting ceremony at the Mahaweli River in Kandy.
As the nights go by, the parade only becomes more magnificent, with an increasing number of performers and elephants joining the procession.
Prepare to be captivated by the rich cultural heritage and spiritual fervor of Esala Perahera.
The Esala Perahera is the most important annual festival in Kandy. Visitor numbers increase dramatically during the final Randoli nights.
Reserved seating along the parade route is limited. Hotels in Kandy also reach full capacity well in advance.
For this reason, group sizes for this experience remain intentionally small.
What this means for you:
Most travelers book their place several months ahead of the event.
If your travel dates fall during the Perahera period, securing your place early helps avoid last-minute availability issues.
Booking Tip
We recommend securing your spot well in advance, especially for the Randoli nights, when demand for Kandy Perahera tours is highest. Early booking guarantees:

Local insight
Your host shares background about the traditions, dancers, and rituals connected to the sacred Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, helping you understand what you are seeing during the procession.
Balanced itinerary
The experience combines the festival evening with time to explore Kandy and the surrounding hill country the next day, including a visit to the scenic Ambuluwawa Biodiversity Complex.
