Experience one of Sri Lanka’s most famous cultural celebrations with an overnight stay in the historic hill city of Kandy during the spectacular Kandy Esala Perahera.

Your journey begins with a scenic drive through Sri Lanka’s hill country before arriving in Kandy, home to the sacred Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic.

After checking in to your comfortable 4-star hotel, take some time to relax before the evening’s festivities begin.

In the late afternoon, head to the city center where reserved seating awaits along the main Perahera route. Seating along the parade route is limited and often sells out well in advance.

We recommend enjoying a late lunch before the event. Dinner will be provided as a packed meal since restaurants become very busy on festival nights.

As darkness falls, the procession begins. The streets fill with rhythmic drumming, traditional Kandyan dancers, whip crackers, fire performers, and beautifully decorated elephants illuminated with thousands of lights.

The parade unfolds slowly through the city, offering a rare opportunity to witness one of Asia’s most impressive living cultural traditions.

After the procession concludes, return to your hotel in Kandy for an overnight stay.

Kandy Perahera Festival: A Visual Extravaganza

The annual Esala Perahera in Kandy, Sri Lanka, is a vibrant Buddhist parade that lasts around 10 days in July/August. Centered around the Buddha’s tooth relic, a sacred object that is usually housed at the Temple of the Tooth in downtown Kandy.
