Socotra Island: A World Apart

Our Socotra Island tour takes you to a remote island in the Arabian Sea, off the coast of Yemen and the Horn of Africa. Known for its unusual plant life, dramatic landscapes and quiet beaches, Socotra is unlike most destinations you may have visited.

The island is home to an extraordinary range of endemic plants, including the famous Dragon’s Blood Tree, with its distinctive umbrella-shaped crown, and the bottle tree, known for its swollen trunk and seasonal flowers. But Socotra is much more than its iconic trees. Limestone plateaus, deep wadis, enormous sand dunes, hidden caves and turquoise lagoons create a remarkable variety of landscapes across the island.

On this 11-day Socotra Island tour from Jeddah, you’ll spend eight days exploring the island with a local team. From the dunes of Arher Beach and the caves along the eastern coast to the Dragon’s Blood Tree forest at Firmihin, the landscapes of the Dixam Plateau and the white sands of Detwah Lagoon, the journey takes you through several of Socotra’s most distinctive environments.

Socotra is not a conventional beach destination. It’s a destination for travellers who enjoy being outdoors, discovering unusual landscapes and experiencing places that remain far from mainstream tourism. The itinerary combines well-known natural highlights with quieter stops along the way, leaving room to appreciate the scenery and photograph what makes the island special.

*Please note: The tour price includes two nights in Jeddah before travelling to Socotra, return charter flights between Jeddah and Socotra, and one night in Jeddah after returning from the island. Because charter flights are extremely limited, the group travels on the same scheduled service. The additional nights in Jeddah provide a buffer around the island flights and reduce the risk of missing the charter due to international flight delays.

Why Visit Socotra Island?

Unique plants and wildlife

Socotra is recognised for its exceptional biodiversity, with a high proportion of plant species found nowhere else on Earth. The Dragon’s Blood Tree is its best-known symbol, while the bottle tree brings another distinctive shape and colour to the landscape. The island is also home to unique birdlife and other endemic species.

Landscapes unlike anywhere else

Few islands offer such a striking combination of environments. You can see towering sand dunes meeting the sea at Arher, explore limestone caves, walk through valleys framed by unusual trees and look out across rugged plateaus. At Detwah Lagoon, pale sand and clear water create a very different scene from the island’s rocky interior.

A distinctive island culture

Socotra is home to communities with their own language, Socotri, and cultural traditions shaped by the island’s long history and relative isolation. Travelling with local guides offers an opportunity to learn more about everyday life and the relationship between local communities and their natural environment.

An outdoor adventure without a demanding trek

This journey combines scenic drives, walks, opportunities for swimming and snorkeling, and time to explore Socotra’s natural surroundings. You don’t need to be a dedicated trekker to enjoy it. Some sites, including Hoq Cave, require walking, but a mountain trek is not the focus of the itinerary.

A rewarding destination for photography

Socotra’s unusual trees, dramatic rock formations, changing light and contrasting coastlines make it an especially interesting destination for photographers. The itinerary brings together several of the island’s signature landscapes, including the Dragon’s Blood Tree forests, sand dunes, beaches and lagoons. Seasonal bottle-tree flowers add another reason to consider the timing of your visit, although flowering conditions vary from year to year.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Socotra?

Socotra’s main travel season generally runs from autumn through spring, when conditions are more suitable for exploring the island. February to April can be an appealing time to visit for travellers interested in the flowering bottle trees, although the timing and abundance of blooms vary from year to year. The island’s landscapes, coastline and distinctive plant life are worth exploring throughout the season.

Our planned departures are in early April 2027 and early March 2028. Both are timed to explore Socotra’s varied landscapes, offering a chance to see the bottle trees in flower if seasonal conditions are favourable. Specific blooms cannot be guaranteed.

Important: Please read before booking

Socotra is a remote destination with limited transport connections and a security situation that can change. Access depends on charter flights, local operating conditions and the security situation in the wider region. Flight schedules may change, and services may be disrupted at short notice.

The Jeddah–Socotra charter flights are essential to this expedition and can only be arranged through a tour operator. They are not independently bookable by participants. If the charter operator cancels or changes a flight, we will work with our local partners and the airline to explore the available options, including postponement or alternative arrangements where feasible.

Please understand that a postponement or recovery of the charter fare cannot be guaranteed. Any refund, alternative arrangement or other remedy will depend on the circumstances, the supplier’s terms and the applicable travel law.

This expedition is suitable for travellers who understand that remote travel involves uncertainty and who are comfortable with possible changes to the itinerary.

We strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance covering medical treatment, emergency evacuation and repatriation, trip cancellation or interruption, and additional travel costs where available. Check the policy wording carefully: some insurers exclude Yemen, Socotra, destinations subject to official travel warnings, or disruption related to security events. Appropriate cover may be difficult to obtain, so please contact us before booking if you have questions about insurance requirements.

Please do not book any non-refundable international flights to/from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

We will monitor the situation and assess whether the trip can operate safely. If conditions change, we will communicate with participants and act in accordance with our contractual and legal obligations.

Special booking conditions for the Socotra expedition

Payment schedule

  • A 30% deposit is required to confirm your booking.
  • The remaining balance is due 60 days before departure.
  • Bookings close three months before departure to allow us to coordinate and confirm the charter flight arrangements.

If you cancel for personal reasons, cancellation charges will be calculated according to those special conditions and applicable law. For cancellations within 30 days of departure, charges may amount to 100% of the trip price.

These conditions do not limit any statutory rights you may have if the trip is cancelled or significantly affected by circumstances covered by applicable travel law.

Your Socotra adventure begins in Jeddah, on the Red Sea coast of Saudi Arabia. Depending on arrival times, the group will meet the tour leader at the hotel and have time to settle in after the journey.

If time permits, there may be an opportunity for a stroll along the Jeddah Corniche or a short sunset boat trip on the Red Sea. Any activities will depend on flight arrival times and local conditions, so the day remains flexible.

International flights to Jeddah can be arranged on request, and additional nights or a longer stay in Saudi Arabia can also be organised for anyone wishing to extend the trip.

  • Accommodation: Ensuite (3*/4* hotel)
  • Meals: Not included
  • Included Activities: None scheduled today
Day 02 Discovering Jeddah

Before heading to Socotra, there is a day to discover Jeddah, a historic port city on the Red Sea with a character of its own. The day is dedicated to exploring what the city has to offer, without a rigid schedule.

A highlight is Al-Balad, Jeddah’s UNESCO-listed Historic District, where traditional coral-stone houses, intricate wooden rawashin balconies, old merchant homes and narrow lanes tell the story of the city’s trading past. The historic streets are best explored on foot, with time to browse small shops, stop for Arabic coffee or sample local food.

The route may also take in the Jeddah Corniche, a waterfront promenade with Red Sea views, public art and open spaces, as well as the striking Al-Rahma Mosque, often called the Floating Mosque, which appears to stand over the water at high tide. Depending on the group’s interests and the pace of the day, there may be time for other stops, a relaxed lunch or simply enjoying the city’s atmosphere.

The programme will remain flexible, allowing time to explore without rushing from one sight to the next. In the evening, the group can prepare for the onward journey to Socotra.

  • Accommodation: Ensuite (3*/4* hotel)
  • Meals: Breakfast
  • Included Activities: Jeddah sightseeing, including Al-Balad, the Corniche and Al-Rahma Mosque, subject to local conditions and the final programme
Day 03 Arrival in Socotra – Hadibo – Arher Beach

The adventure continues with a charter flight from Jeddah to Socotra. On arrival, the local team will be waiting to welcome the group and assist with arrival formalities. Please keep a copy of the Yemeni visa accessible, as it may be requested during immigration procedures.

Depending on the flight schedule, there may be a short stop in Hadibo, Socotra’s main town, before heading towards the island’s northeastern coast. The drive leads to Arher Beach, one of Socotra’s most striking coastal landscapes, where a freshwater stream emerges between towering granite mountains and flows towards the sea.

After setting up camp, there will be time to enjoy the beach, take a refreshing swim if conditions permit, or climb the enormous sand dunes for panoramic views of the coastline. As the sun sets, the contrast between white sand, granite cliffs and the blue sea makes Arher a memorable introduction to Socotra.

After dark, the shoreline may reveal another natural spectacle: bioluminescent plankton glowing in the water. This phenomenon is seasonal and depends on conditions, so sightings cannot be guaranteed.

  • Accommodation: Camping at Arher Beach
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  • Included Activities: Airport transfer, visit to Hadibo if time permits, Arher Beach exploration
Day 04 Arher Beach – Hoq Cave – Ras Irisseyl – Arher Beach

The day begins with a drive to Terbak village, the starting point for the walk to Hoq Cave. The trail climbs through rocky terrain towards the cave entrance, offering expansive views over the surrounding landscape along the way. Inside, the cave extends for several kilometres, with impressive chambers, stalactites, stalagmites and delicate crystalline formations. The cool interior offers a striking contrast to the dry, sunlit landscape outside.

The walk to the cave requires a reasonable level of fitness and sturdy footwear. The full cave is extensive, so the time spent exploring inside will depend on conditions and the group's pace.

Later, the journey continues towards Ras Irisseyl, at the eastern tip of Socotra, where the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean meet. The coastal landscape and small fishing settlements offer a glimpse of life on this remote part of the island.

At low tide, the nearby shore is also known for its sand crabs, which leave intricate patterns and small sand structures around their burrows. The timing of this visit will depend on the tides.

Return to Arher Beach for dinner and another night beneath Socotra’s star-filled skies.

  • Accommodation: Camping at Arher Beach
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, hot and soft drinks
  • Included Activities: Hoq Cave hike and exploration, visit to Ras Irisseyl, coastal walks
Day 05 Arher Beach – Homhil Nature Sanctuary – Dihamri Marine Protected Area

After breakfast, the route heads towards Homhil, a protected natural area known for its distinctive endemic plants. Dragon’s Blood Trees, frankincense trees and bottle trees grow among the rocky hillsides, creating one of Socotra’s characteristic landscapes.

Walking trails lead through the vegetation to viewpoints overlooking the coastal plain and the Arabian Sea. One of the highlights is a natural rock pool, where the water and surrounding scenery create a memorable place to pause, weather and water levels permitting. The walk provides opportunities to appreciate the island’s unusual plant life and photograph its distinctive forms.

Later, the journey continues to Dihamri Marine Protected Area, one of Socotra’s best-known places for exploring the underwater world. Its coral reef supports a rich variety of marine life, including colourful reef fish, moray eels and, occasionally, rays and turtles.

Depending on sea conditions, there will be an opportunity to swim or snorkel along the reef. Snorkelling equipment may be available to rent locally, subject to availability. Diving can also be arranged separately where conditions, local facilities and schedules allow.

The day ends with a night camping near the coast at Dihamri, with the sound of the sea close by.

  • Accommodation: Camping at Dihamri Marine Protected Area
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, hot and soft drinks
  • Included Activities: Homhil nature walks and viewpoints, Dihamri coastal exploration, swimming or snorkelling subject to conditions

Optional activity: Scuba diving

For certified divers, scuba diving may be available at Dihamri Marine Protected Area at an additional cost. The reef is known for its marine life and coral formations. Diving is subject to local availability, sea conditions and the dive operator’s requirements. Please let us know in advance if you are interested so availability can be checked.

Day 06 Dihamri – Daburk Waterfall – Wadi Kalisan – Momi Plateau – Hayf and Zahek Dunes – Omak Beach

Today explores Socotra’s southeastern landscapes, with a journey through rugged terrain, freshwater wadis and coastal dunes. It is one of the more adventurous days of the expedition, with travel on rough tracks and several stops along the way. The exact route and number of visits may need to be adjusted according to road conditions and the time available.

The first stop may be Daburk Waterfall, where water cascades into a natural pool surrounded by rocky terrain. If conditions allow, there may be time to enjoy the setting or take a swim.

The route then continues towards Wadi Kalisan, a beautiful limestone gorge known for its clear freshwater pools and small waterfalls. A walk down into the wadi passes distinctive bottle trees and leads to the pools below. The descent and return climb require sure-footedness, and the walk will depend on local conditions and the group's abilities.

Later, the journey crosses Momi Plateau, where unusual vegetation, including frankincense and bottle trees, grows among the rocky landscape. The plateau also offers wide views across the surrounding terrain towards the sea.

Towards the end of the day, the scenery changes dramatically as the route reaches the vast coastal dunes around Hayf and Zahek and Omak Beach. Here, sweeping hills of sand stretch towards the sea, creating one of Socotra’s most striking contrasts between desert and coastline. There will be time to walk among the dunes and photograph the changing colours as the sun gets lower.

After a full day exploring the island’s southeastern landscapes, camp near Omak Beach.

  • Accommodation: Camping at Omak Beach
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, hot and soft drinks
  • Included Activities: Scenic drives, waterfall and wadi visits subject to conditions, walks on Momi Plateau and the coastal dunes
Day 07 Omak Beach – Duogab Cave – Firmihin Forest – Dixam Plateau

After breakfast, the journey continues inland towards the dramatic landscapes of Socotra’s central highlands. The first stop is Duogab Cave, overlooking the ocean, before the route climbs towards Dixam Plateau and its rugged limestone scenery.

Dixam is one of the island’s most distinctive regions, with wide plateaus, deep canyons and scattered Dragon’s Blood Trees. The area is also home to local pastoral communities whose lives remain closely connected to the land and their livestock.

A highlight of the day is Firmihin Forest, where Dragon’s Blood Trees grow in remarkable density. These unusual trees, with their distinctive umbrella-shaped crowns, create one of Socotra’s most iconic landscapes. With a local guide, there may also be an opportunity to learn how the trees’ valuable red resin has traditionally been collected.

Depending on the route and conditions, the day may include a walk through the forest and a visit to viewpoints overlooking the surrounding canyons. There may also be time to explore parts of Derhur Canyon, known for its striking rock formations and freshwater pools.

As the afternoon light softens, the landscape offers excellent opportunities for photography before settling into camp on Dixam Plateau.

  • Accommodation: Camping on Dixam Plateau
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, hot and soft drinks
  • Included Activities: Duogab Cave visit, Firmihin Forest exploration, scenic viewpoints and walks, subject to local conditions
Day 08 Dixam Plateau – Qalansiyah – Detwah Lagoon

Today the journey crosses the island towards its western coast, where the scenery changes from rugged highlands to fishing villages, white sand and turquoise water.

The route includes Qalansiyah, Socotra’s second-largest settlement and a traditional fishing town. From here, the nearby Detwah Lagoon offers one of the island’s most beautiful coastal landscapes. Protected waters, pale sand and striking shades of blue create a setting quite different from the rocky interior.

There will be time to walk along the shore, enjoy the views and, if conditions allow, swim in the lagoon. The area is also known for its birdlife and marine environment, making it a rewarding place to observe nature at a slower pace.

A visit with a local resident may offer further insight into life around the lagoon and the relationship between the community and its coastal surroundings, depending on local arrangements.

As the day winds down, enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of Detwah, with time to appreciate the coastline and photograph the changing light.

  • Accommodation: Camping at Detwah Lagoon
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, hot and soft drinks
  • Included Activities: Visit to Qalansiyah, Detwah Lagoon exploration, coastal walks and swimming subject to conditions
Day 09 Detwah Lagoon – Shu’ab Beach – Ayhaft Canyon – Hadibo

After breakfast, the journey begins with a short drive to Qalansiyah, where local fishing boats will take the group along Socotra’s western coast towards Shu’ab Beach. The boat trip offers an opportunity to look for spinner dolphins and explore the clear waters around this remote stretch of coastline.

Shu’ab is known for its beautiful beach and turquoise sea. Depending on weather and sea conditions, there will be time to relax on the sand and snorkel in the surrounding waters. Dolphin sightings are possible but cannot be guaranteed, and the boat trip may need to be adjusted or cancelled if conditions are unsuitable.

After returning from the boat trip, enjoy lunch and some time around Detwah Lagoon before continuing towards Ayhaft Canyon National Park. Here, freshwater pools lie among rocky slopes and distinctive vegetation, including desert roses, tamarind and cucumber trees. The canyon is also home to birdlife, including several species endemic to Socotra. If time and conditions allow, there will be an opportunity to walk through the valley and enjoy its natural pools.

Later in the day, the journey continues to Hadibo, where the group will spend the final night on Socotra. Being closer to the main town also allows time to browse local shops or pick up a few souvenirs, depending on arrival time.

  • Accommodation: Local accommodation or camping near Hadibo, subject to final arrangements
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, hot and soft drinks
  • Included Activities: Boat trip to Shu’ab Beach, opportunities for snorkelling and dolphin watching subject to conditions, Ayhaft Canyon visit and time in Hadibo if the schedule allows
Day 10 Hadibo – Socotra Airport – Jeddah

After breakfast, the journey returns towards Hadibo for the flight back to Jeddah. If time and the flight schedule allow, there may be an opportunity to stop at a Dragon’s Blood Tree nursery, where young trees are being raised in a protected environment.

Socotra’s distinctive trees face natural and human pressures, including damage to young growth from grazing animals. Conservation and cultivation initiatives play an important role in supporting the future of these remarkable species.

The charter flight is expected to depart Socotra in the afternoon, arriving in Jeddah later in the day. After arrival, transfer to the hotel for an overnight stay before the onward journey home.

Flight timings and the availability of any final sightseeing will depend on the confirmed charter schedule and local arrangements.

  • Accommodation: Ensuite (3*/4* hotel in Jeddah)
  • Meals: Breakfast; other meals not included
  • Included Activities: Transfer to Socotra Airport, Dragon’s Blood Tree nursery visit if time permits, charter flight to Jeddah and hotel transfer
Day 11 Departure from Jeddah

After breakfast, the Socotra adventure comes to an end. Depending on the flight schedule, there may be time for a relaxed morning before checking out and transferring to Jeddah Airport for the journey home.

For anyone wishing to spend more time in Saudi Arabia, additional nights or onward travel arrangements can be organised on request.

  • Accommodation: Not included
  • Meals: Breakfast
  • Included Activities: one airport transfer for the group, subject to the agreed arrangements

Tour Essentials

In the following sections, you'll find the essential information for our Socotra Island tour, including accommodation, meals, transport, visas, physical requirements and practical travel advice. Socotra is a remote destination, and conditions and facilities differ from those on a conventional holiday.

Accommodation

The tour includes three nights in Jeddah and seven nights on Socotra.

In Jeddah, accommodation is in a comfortable 3- or 4-star hotel with ensuite facilities. On Socotra, most nights are spent camping in scenic locations, including beaches, coastal areas and the central highlands. The final overnight stay will be in or near Hadibo, subject to local arrangements.

Camping is an important part of the Socotra experience, allowing the group to stay close to the island's landscapes and away from its few settlements. Facilities are basic and vary by location. This is an expedition rather than a hotel-based tour, and accommodation on Socotra may change if local conditions or access require adjustments.

Participants sharing accommodation will generally be paired with another traveller. Please contact us before booking to discuss any specific accommodation requirements or possible single arrangements.

Meals

Full board is provided during the Socotra portion of the expedition, with meals prepared or arranged by the local team. The food is generally simple and reflects the practicalities of travelling in a remote destination. Drinking water and hot or soft drinks are provided as specified in the itinerary.

Meals in Jeddah are not included, allowing flexibility to explore the city's restaurants and local cuisine.

Vegetarian meals and other dietary requirements should be discussed with us before booking. Options on Socotra are more limited than in larger destinations, so it is important to communicate any requirements in advance. We cannot guarantee that every dietary preference or allergy can be accommodated in all locations.

Transport

Travel on Socotra is by 4x4 vehicles, using a combination of paved roads and rough tracks. Journeys can be bumpy and take longer than expected, particularly when travelling between remote areas. The route may be adjusted according to road conditions, weather and local access.

The itinerary also includes a local boat trip to Shu'ab Beach, subject to sea conditions.

The return charter flights between Jeddah and Socotra are included in the tour package and must be arranged through the tour operator. Participants cannot book these charter flights independently. Flight schedules and baggage allowances are subject to the charter operator's conditions and may change.

International flights to and from Jeddah are not included. These can be arranged on request, as can additional nights or onward travel in Saudi Arabia.

Passports and Visas

A Yemeni visa is required for the Socotra visit. Visa arrangements are coordinated through the local operator as part of the expedition preparations. A passport copy and any additional documents requested must be provided within the specified timeframe.

A Saudi visa or other appropriate permission to enter Saudi Arabia may also be required, depending on nationality and circumstances. Saudi visa fees and arrangements are not included in the tour price.

Entry requirements can change and differ by nationality. Participants are responsible for ensuring that their travel documents meet the requirements for every country visited. Please check the current requirements with the relevant authorities before booking flights.

Physical Level

This is an active nature expedition involving long drives on rough roads, walks over uneven terrain, sandy beaches, dunes and rocky landscapes. A reasonable level of fitness, sure-footedness and the ability to manage basic facilities are important.

Some activities are more demanding than others. The walk to Hoq Cave involves an uphill trail and exploration over uneven ground, while walks in wadis and across dunes can be tiring, particularly in warm weather. The itinerary does not include a dedicated mountain trek, but it is not suitable for travellers seeking a fully accessible or low-activity holiday.

Swimming and snorkelling opportunities depend on sea conditions and individual ability. Participation in these activities is optional.

Please contact us before booking if there are mobility limitations, medical considerations or other circumstances that may affect participation. Activities may need to be adapted according to conditions and the group's abilities.

Travel Insurance

Comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory for every participant.

The policy must be valid for the entire trip and explicitly cover Socotra and the activities planned. It should include medical expenses, emergency evacuation and repatriation, as well as trip cancellation and interruption and additional travel costs where available.

Please check the policy wording directly with the insurer before booking. Policies may exclude Yemen, Socotra, destinations subject to official travel warnings, security-related incidents or disruption to charter flights. Do not assume that a standard travel insurance policy provides the necessary protection.

Participants must confirm that suitable insurance is in place and provide the requested policy and emergency contact details before departure. If appropriate cover cannot be obtained, please contact us before making a booking.

Security and Changing Conditions

Socotra is a remote destination, and access depends on charter flights, local operating conditions and the wider security situation. Flight schedules, routes and activities may change at short notice.

The expedition will be reviewed against the security situation and operational conditions before departure. If circumstances affect the feasibility or safety of the trip, arrangements may need to change in accordance with the booking conditions and applicable travel law.

Participants should read the important travel and booking information on this page carefully before booking. Official travel advice should also be checked before booking and again before departure.

Cash and Additional Expenses

Socotra has limited services and few opportunities to pay by card, particularly outside Hadibo. Participants should bring sufficient cash for personal expenses, souvenirs, optional activities and any meals or drinks not included in the package.

Check the local currency and the availability of exchange facilities before travel. It is best to arrive in Jeddah prepared for the onward journey, as access to banking services on Socotra is limited.

Optional activities, such as scuba diving, are not included unless specifically stated in the itinerary. Diving is subject to local availability, sea conditions and the operator's requirements. Any additional costs will be explained where arrangements can be confirmed in advance.

Travel Companions

This is a small-group expedition for curious travellers who enjoy nature, photography and exploring places beyond conventional tourist routes. The trip requires flexibility, patience and an appreciation of the realities of travelling in a remote destination.

The minimum group size is 8. The group will travel with a local team familiar with the island and its conditions, alongside the MAHO tour leader as confirmed for the departure.
